Working on a big canvas: 40 acres on Lookout Mountain, Alabama.

Purchase and Location

I bought this property in 2005 and named it Richmond Woods for my father who taught me about nature and respect for the wild. It's located in Alabama near the Alabama/Georgia state line. The small nearby village of Mentone, AL has been a mountain retreat for 150 years for people escaping the summer heat of Birmingham and Atlanta. My companion, Carolyn, has helped me every step of the way.

A Cottage in the Woods
When you were little, did someone read fairy tales to you? Invariably, there was mention of a cottage in the woods. Our plan is to build such a place: handmade, no architect plans, buying local materials or using salvaged materials. The purpose of this blog is to document our progress.

Finished Sheathing (for now)

This past weekend, I finished the sheathing on the screen porch; at least as far as I can go till I finish framing the door. I am now very near to the first 'anniversary' of ground breaking!

It is time to start making plywood reinforcing plates (called 'scabs') for my trusses.

I just hope I can have a few more weekends as beautiful as this past one.

There is nothing like working in shirtsleeves the first day of February!

Another Chilly Weekend

This past weekend Carolyn accompanied me to the mountain to help out with sheathing the porch. Bless her heart, she thought it was gong to be mild. Actually, it was not too bad. Just bad enough to take flight at dark to the comfort of a warm motel room.

By the end of the weekend, we had gotten most of the sheathing on the lower portion of the porch.

Porch Framing Done!

Saturday was a cold day but I was determined to get at least one wall up and hopefully two. The first wall went quickly because I pretty much had it framed the last time I was up which was before Christmas. I just had to add the top cripples and stand 'er up.

The next one was going pretty fast, too, mainly because I had already notched the 4x4s. Just as I was getting it laid out, a little snow shower sprang up. It only lasted about 10 minutes but it was soon followed by a bit of sleet. I finished bolting together the timbers and covered my tools.

It rained during the night and warmed up. The next day was sunny and fairly mild. I was inspired. I knocked out the second wall and got most of the third wall up. All that is left to do before roof framing can begin is to nail on the top plates. I will leave the screen door framing till later. For now, this is all I need to set roof trusses on.
