Working on a big canvas: 40 acres on Lookout Mountain, Alabama.

Purchase and Location

I bought this property in 2005 and named it Richmond Woods for my father who taught me about nature and respect for the wild. It's located in Alabama near the Alabama/Georgia state line. The small nearby village of Mentone, AL has been a mountain retreat for 150 years for people escaping the summer heat of Birmingham and Atlanta. My companion, Carolyn, has helped me every step of the way.

A Cottage in the Woods
When you were little, did someone read fairy tales to you? Invariably, there was mention of a cottage in the woods. Our plan is to build such a place: handmade, no architect plans, buying local materials or using salvaged materials. The purpose of this blog is to document our progress.

Recent Updates

April work: meanwhile dogwood and azaleas (all wild stuff) blooming.

Below, left: Russ finished the wiring. Three extra circuits were added. One will be to operate the well pump. Other two: in case we need them later (such as for garage). Below, right: Carolyn found an awesome deal on unfinished, wide plank red oak flooring. Russ got a "come quick and bring your credit card" call. Grade 2, 4.25" wide... $1.63/sq ft!!!

Below, left: New kitchen floor installed. Carolyn will finish with turpentine and linseed oil 50-50 mix then Russ will wax. It's an unbelievably tough finish, strongly water repellent. Right, here's a view of the doorway and passthrough from the kitchen to the living room (formerly the cabin). We're putting a dining room table in the corner of the living room (aka great room) on the other side of the passthrough for when we have 10 people to dinner inside. Of course our usual entertaining is outside....

Below: bathroom stuff. Some little shelves for necessities and the floor has been grouted. Also, Russ's grandmother's big doors have been hung between the bedroom and bathroom. Depite vigorous cleaning, they are much darker than the rest of the wood. Carolyn will probably seal all the bedroom and bathroom trim with dark walnut tinted polyurethane to make it a little darker. One coat of it won't darken that much. The floor has some dark notes in it so actually goes pretty well. All the other doors (from an old schoolhouse) will be painted Jefferson white, the white being used throughout the house.

Russ actually moved the bed in. Gratifying to see that there will be plenty of room for a king-sized bed and two side tables. : )

And finally, the screen porch has been trimmed out. Now we need a new screen door, the screen needs to be replaced and new indoor-outdoor carpet installed. And of course everything needs to be stained. We have a big table out here that seats 8 or 10 people.

Carolyn has been in Italy for a family visit. Can't wait to see it all in person!
