Working on a big canvas: 40 acres on Lookout Mountain, Alabama.

Purchase and Location

I bought this property in 2005 and named it Richmond Woods for my father who taught me about nature and respect for the wild. It's located in Alabama near the Alabama/Georgia state line. The small nearby village of Mentone, AL has been a mountain retreat for 150 years for people escaping the summer heat of Birmingham and Atlanta. My companion, Carolyn, has helped me every step of the way.

A Cottage in the Woods
When you were little, did someone read fairy tales to you? Invariably, there was mention of a cottage in the woods. Our plan is to build such a place: handmade, no architect plans, buying local materials or using salvaged materials. The purpose of this blog is to document our progress.

More Months; More Accomplished

Its been two months since our last update so, here goes. Since the last post, we have finished the oak floor in the kitchen and painted the kitchen walls. Carolyn has painted all of the interior doors and I have cleaned and replaced the door knob/lock sets.

Carolyn continues with the daunting task of landscaping. Her newest installation is an old Japanese Maple that has been hacked to pieces and generally mistreated by previous owners. It was given to us by a neighbor who had it dug up for "nicer" landscaping so he could sell his house. His crew wrapped the root ball and loaded it on my trailer. We kept it watered for 3 days until we could take it to its new home. Another neighbor helped me wrap landscape cloth around the crown just before we took off. It survived the trip and so far is still green though a little worse for having been transplanted into a foreign place. Thank goodness for lots of rain.

We ordered and received our second heat pump a few weeks ago. Here is the foundation I built for the outside unit. This past weekend our HVAC guys came out and put it into service. Now the entire house is air conditioned! Just in time, too - Summer is upon us. The temperature isn't so bad yet but because of all the rain, the humidity is a bear. It is blessed relief to walk into a space that is both cool and DRY! It is also really nice to be able to finish up some of my work in comfort. Like closing up the breaker panel and completing the kitchen wiring.

I now have most of the switches and sockets wired. Its nice to be able to step into a dark room and flip a switch to illuminate your way. I'll finish the last four sockets this weekend. All that will remain for the kitchen wiring is hanging a couple of light fixtures and a ceiling fan.

We've ordered and received new kitchen cabinets and they are waiting for Nathan and crew to assemble them. Also, there are a couple of 3-drawer cabinets for the bathroom vanity. Once all the cabinets are in place, I have a plumber lined up to hook us up with water and gas. Nathan's cousin Wayn is also on the calendar for mucho painting. All the window and door casings and maybe a little touch up on the kitchen walls. Also, I'm getting him to put some sealer on all the exterior siding of the Power House, the Water House, and the Shop.
