Working on a big canvas: 40 acres on Lookout Mountain, Alabama.

Purchase and Location

I bought this property in 2005 and named it Richmond Woods for my father who taught me about nature and respect for the wild. It's located in Alabama near the Alabama/Georgia state line. The small nearby village of Mentone, AL has been a mountain retreat for 150 years for people escaping the summer heat of Birmingham and Atlanta. My companion, Carolyn, has helped me every step of the way.

A Cottage in the Woods
When you were little, did someone read fairy tales to you? Invariably, there was mention of a cottage in the woods. Our plan is to build such a place: handmade, no architect plans, buying local materials or using salvaged materials. The purpose of this blog is to document our progress.

Rushing toward Completion!

Nathan Owen, our builder and his team, are on the job! We give him a long, long list then in no time he runs out of work. So here's the latest:

The Screen Porch

New landing. With the skimpy step before and door that opened out, you either got knocked off the step or the door hit you in the ankle as you went in. Now it will be much nicer!

Added roughcut pine casing around the screen openings and sills as well as additional siding in unfinished areas. Carolyn will be staining this with the same honey color the rest of the house and trim are finished in when the weather warms and pollen dies down (May!). View in the distance is Russ's workshop, currently unfinished and a mess. But we will put Nathan on it to add windows, doors, steps, etc.

Added handrails on all steps

Added crawlspace doors

Bedroom and Bathroom

Earlier:
Stone and tile shower. The shower room is almost 8' long with a window up high.

Mini-split heatpump. Heat and AC. We plan to add a gas heater in the bathroom, just to take the chill off on winter mornings.

  • Bathroom tile floor, about to get grouted (left below)
  • Casing around the windows in the bedroom end/bathroom. Carolyn will paint them Homestead Resort (VA!) Jefferson White, one of the colors we've used all over the house.
  • Door and window trim: Stained and put up by Nathan. We tried to match the floor.
The bedroom, bathroom, laundry room and shower are all painted out (Carolyn). The color on the walls is Sweet Serenity, a pale blue-green (depending on the light, as you can see even in these pictures). Ceilings Homestead Resort Jefferson White. Carolyn will paint the old schoolhouse doors in the bedroom end of the house Homestead Resort Jefferson White.

New oak floor (Winchester Oak) in the bedroom. Hey! who put that black mark on the new baseboard?!

Kitchen end

Russ has completed the big wiring job and we have sheet rock on the way. After it's installed and sanded, we have 4-1/2" unfinished red oak plank floor (shown below) that Nathan will lay. We will finish it with half-and-half linseed oil and turpentine and then wax it. Kind of a strong smell at first but we've gotten used to it in the cabin. And know what? It's excellent for being long-lasting. We have abused the cabin floor, but when you clean it (if!), it still looks good and we haven't really touched it since 2010!

Kitchen will need painting (Carolyn) then a lot of finish work (Nathan!). We will have a 12' countertop, will tile some areas near the stove and passthrough to the great room. And our existing, homemade freestanding sink area will have the sink removed and become an island. We will keep the limestone tile but in place of the sink, we will put a hunk of marble. Russ is hoping for lots of pastry and marble is a perfect place to roll out pie crust, etc.
