Working on a big canvas: 40 acres on Lookout Mountain, Alabama.

Purchase and Location

I bought this property in 2005 and named it Richmond Woods for my father who taught me about nature and respect for the wild. It's located in Alabama near the Alabama/Georgia state line. The small nearby village of Mentone, AL has been a mountain retreat for 150 years for people escaping the summer heat of Birmingham and Atlanta. My companion, Carolyn, has helped me every step of the way.

A Cottage in the Woods
When you were little, did someone read fairy tales to you? Invariably, there was mention of a cottage in the woods. Our plan is to build such a place: handmade, no architect plans, buying local materials or using salvaged materials. The purpose of this blog is to document our progress.

Russ 60th Birthday Party Weekend!

Finally, the big day is here! Thanks to Amber and Lance who helped us get ready on Friday/Saturday then clean up afterwards and Ginny who was a big help setting everything up! We picked up 25 lbs of pork butt and 4 chickens quartered in the morning. Here's the new BBQ pit, full of pork, chicken and corn!

Ginny, setting up the food table. A crew of experts provided advice, drank beer and wanted to know, "how long til it's ready?"

We ended up with sliced tomatoes, cucumbers with an orangey vinaigrette (thanks, Lance), corn, BBQ pork, chicken, cole slaw then fruit salads, homemade pickles and desserts provided by Patty, Sinclair, Kris, Rebekah... everything very good.

Afterwards, just relaxing: Amber and Lance at their tent; Sean and Stella playing in the cabin

Henry came over and immediately gravitated toward Cary

Also in the mix: Patty and Chuck, Ed, Bill Adams, Bobby.

That night we had a campfire and sat around talking til 10-ish. Some nightowls stayed up later.

Next morning at the Settlement at Monk's Cove, "The Barn", the out-of-town guests met for brunch. Sara and Scott decided I had done enough so they fixed eggs and pancakes to go with the corned beef hash, fruit and other goodies.

Ginny, Cary trying to escape, John Grubb

Scott dozing, Cary trying to escape again. We had dinner together Sunday night. By then, all the guests had left so it was just family. Monday morning, we put some cheese strata Ginny made in the oven but by the time it came out, she was on the road back to VA with Scott. Sara, Sean and Stella helped us eat leftover corn pudding, corned beef and cheese strata. Ginny, you missed a very good breakfast!

Interspersed with eating and talking, everyone had a good look around Richmond Woods and pronounced the woods, rocks and cabin wonderful. Everyone was pleased with our inoffensive privy. Various scenic drives were enjoyed. Fun had by all! We invited everyone back in primetime: spring or fall.
