Working on a big canvas: 40 acres on Lookout Mountain, Alabama.

Purchase and Location

I bought this property in 2005 and named it Richmond Woods for my father who taught me about nature and respect for the wild. It's located in Alabama near the Alabama/Georgia state line. The small nearby village of Mentone, AL has been a mountain retreat for 150 years for people escaping the summer heat of Birmingham and Atlanta. My companion, Carolyn, has helped me every step of the way.

A Cottage in the Woods
When you were little, did someone read fairy tales to you? Invariably, there was mention of a cottage in the woods. Our plan is to build such a place: handmade, no architect plans, buying local materials or using salvaged materials. The purpose of this blog is to document our progress.

October BBQ and more work on the Bathroom and Garden

Small turnout for the BBQ: we had to reschedule because of bad weather our original date. Lots could not make the new date.

And continuing the work:
Top row, new gas heater for the bathroom. You close the doors to the bathroom and it heats up the whole space quickly, nice and toasty for the new shower (we are now using), even with no shower curtain. : )

Middle row, work continues on the composting toilet. At this point (December), it's almost done.

Middle and Bottom row, somehow the 50-yr old Japanese maple from my neighbor's yard is still alive. How, I don't know since August is the worst possible time to plant. I have now planted two more J Maples of a different variety all outside our bedroom. This will be my Japanese garden. More to come! last time I was up, I started pruning the JM. It has too many interior growing branches due to incorrect pruning.

Also planted two little fruit trees we've grown from seed. I hope at least one is a peach! We have to be careful not to block the solar system. Also, we took four old windows and make a teeny greenhouse around the fig Ala gave us. Trying to help it not die back to the ground this winter as it has done the past 4 winters!
