Working on a big canvas: 40 acres on Lookout Mountain, Alabama.

Purchase and Location

I bought this property in 2005 and named it Richmond Woods for my father who taught me about nature and respect for the wild. It's located in Alabama near the Alabama/Georgia state line. The small nearby village of Mentone, AL has been a mountain retreat for 150 years for people escaping the summer heat of Birmingham and Atlanta. My companion, Carolyn, has helped me every step of the way.

A Cottage in the Woods
When you were little, did someone read fairy tales to you? Invariably, there was mention of a cottage in the woods. Our plan is to build such a place: handmade, no architect plans, buying local materials or using salvaged materials. The purpose of this blog is to document our progress.

Progress

The crew worked the week leading up to 4th of July but didn't quite finish; they are to finish this Friday.

On July 4th, we went blackberry picking and made blackberry pancakes...

And we emptied Chuck's trailer and put away all the insulation he gave us to install another day.

The Cavalry Arrives

On Monday Daniel Millican, his brother, nephew, and a host of others arrived with a truck load of wood and tools. Daniel is the proprietor of Millican Forest Products with his own mill in Valley Head, Alabama. They immediately set to unloading lumber and within a short time, they had Kevin skinning the bark off the siding with a draw knife.

Tim and Ken started wrapping the house while Doc and I inspected windows that had been sitting under tarps for the better part of a year.

Ken and Doc made fast work of sheathing one of the large gable ends and after lunch they trimmed a bunch of windows. Meanwhile, Kevin is still skinning bark. If he keeps that up all Summer, his arms will look like the Hulk.

By the end of the day had all the glass hung in one end of the cabin.

There may be some who are disappointed in me for not doing all this myself. Fair enough. All I will say in my defense is that I will be enjoying a warm dry cabin this Winter.

Guessing Game

Not really any pix of this weekend's work. Mainly because not much happened. At least not where I was. Meanwhile, poor Carolyn had to deal with a flooded basement in Atlanta because a drain hose came off the washer.

I finished the sheathing on the lower part of the house. I am going to need some help with the gable-end sheathing because the sheets of OSB are heavy and a tad unwieldy on a ladder.

Also I finished the framing on the gable ends so that the OSB will go up without a lot of cussing. I think I am ready for some professional help - with doors and windows, that is, not my head.

A couple of critters were hanging out in the neighborhood so I took their portraits.

And now for the game portion of the show...

...Any guesses what this is?
